The launch of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 2025/26 seems to be imminent as a huge new rule change was announced on Friday morning.

In what is the biggest scoring system shake-up since the game’s invention over two decades ago, defensive contributions are to come into play this season.

This looks set to give a big boost to centre-backs and defensive midfielders, especially. The latter have been a long-overlooked group of players and may now enter the Fantasy reckoning.

How do players get contribution points in FPL?

PositionDefensive contributionsPoints on offer
Defenders10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBIT)+2 points
Midfielders and forwards12 clearances, blocks, interceptions, recoveries and tackles (CBIRT)+2 points

DEFENDERS

Any defender who reaches a combined total of 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBIT) in a single match will score two FPL points.

Defensive contribution points are capped at two points per fixture. So, no matter if a defender makes 10 or 50 CBITs, they get two.

MIDFIELDERS AND FORWARDS

Midfielders and forwards will get rewarded for ball recoveries, as well as the above.

But they have to get 12 clearances, blocks, interceptions, recoveries and tackles (CBIRTs) in order to score two FPL points.

Again, there’s a cap: a maximum of two defensive contribution points per match.

WHICH PLAYERS WOULD HAVE GOT THE MOST DEFENSIVE CONTRIBUTION POINTS LAST SEASON?

While we crunch the numbers and attempt to get our heads around this new rule, the Premier League have helpfully already put out a table of the defenders and midfielders who would have most benefitted from contribution points last season.

DEFENDERS

PlayerStarts% starts in which they would have got defensive contributionsDefensive contribution points
Tarkowski3366.7%44
Bednarek3066.7%40
Huijsen2673.1%38
Murillo3652.8%38
Faes3056.7%34
Lacroix3548.6%34
O’Shea3548.6%34
Branthwaite2857.1%32
Collins3842.1%32
Kilman3839.5%30

MIDFIELDERS

PlayerStarts% starts in which they would have got defensive contributionsDefensive contribution points
Caicedo3855.3%42
Anderson3354.6%36
Gomes3551.4%36
Gueye3551.4%36
Norgaard3450.0%34
Baleba3148.4%30
Cook3246.9%30
Gravenberch3740.5%30
Lerma2653.9%28
Christie2748.2%26
Ndidi2846.4%26
Andre3141.9%26

No surprise to see centre-halves and defensive midfielders dominating the tables above.

And it’s no shock to see the defenders of the lower-to-mid-table sides high up the list. These are the teams that are less likely to have possession and are consequently forced to do more defensive work.

What you ideally want is defensive contribution mixed in with clean sheet potential. Murillo and James Tawkowski, for instance, combine this.

Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic, indeed, would have finished second and first among defenders for FPL points last season had defensive contributions been in place.

Moises Caicedo meanwhile would have risen above the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Brennan Johnson with his extra points.

More reaction and articles to come later today.

I've always leaned towards nailed-on CBs who score the occasional header rather than their more expensive FB teammates.

Can't remember. There's a free game which maybe gets 200k?

The paid games (smaller leagues with 20k ish teams) with the big prizes just get dominated by saddos who buy in 50+ teams, though as there's no limit.

Fan Team is either £1 or £10 to play
With at the moment 360 players for the £1 game plu2 442 for the £10 games
Prizes are paid out to usually the top 10% of teams
I can't remember how many have played in the past but it's definitely a lot less than the 11 million plus at FPL .
A 15 man squad game very similar to FPL

I don't necessarily think it is a "huge" change, unless the pricing dynamic remains such that CBs listed above remained lower in price than the FBs. I don't many managers would pick Lacroix over Munoz for example unless there was (say) a £1.0m price difference still. Happy to be proved wrong, and it is a great article (as always).

Interestingly, Munoz and Lacroix would have ended up on the same points per game (4.2) had the defensive cons been in last season. 20 years of instinct would still tell me to go for the attacking defender but now it's weighing up the slow and steady, and more reliable, def cons versus the unpredictability but bigger thrill - and higher ceiling - of goals/assists.

Yes, it is increasing the pool of prospective players to choose from. Also, it gives an interesting option to rotate two or three cheap defenders and a defensive midfielder if the fpl prices don't yet reflect the potential.

Agree. Certainly not 'huge'. Attacking FBs are way more attractive, given the potential for points from many sources - CS, goal, assist, bonus. As you said, it will come down to price. A £1m difference, maybe, but only if we're tight on funds. There needs to be price hikes for the high scoring players so that managers are under pressure, thereby forcing us to consider the more defensive players. Last season, the premiums under performed, so money wasn't an issue.

    One for defenders - https://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/65048/

It has a global filter and currently shows all matches last season, but could be useful when the new season starts to set it for how you want - all matches/last four matches etc. Could be some emerging stars next season we hadn't considered before.

There will be some decisions. Such as CB at promoted teams under attack getting two points, but losing two points or more when they concede. So I'll probably target CB at teams like Everton who can keep clean sheets while under pressure. Obviously defensive midfielders could do well. This rule is something that won't be a tremendous problem for former Sky players who lived off these stats. Bou def mids, Rodri etc....all gold in Sky with a similar rule.

    I don't love the change

    1. Stats stats stats. Pick the players at the top of the stats table. Nothing much personal or interesting about it. Just more labour-intensive.

    2. Confusing definitions (e.g. recoveries)

    3. Thresholds of 10 CBITs or 12 CBIRTS for 2 points drastically reduces the viable player options compared to thresholds of 5 and 6 for 1 point

    4. Can't even see how many CBITs & CBIRTs players have during the game. So can't even cheer for your player to get over the threshold for 2 points.

Overall, a little too complex and opaque

Agreed. I can see why some people might like it, but for someone like me who enjoys the game but doesn't want to think about everything too much (I didn't enjoy the new Assistant Manager chip for the same reason) it makes me less likely to want to play next season.

Right, the way it separates the playerbase is not by skill or football foresight, but by time and money spent on stats tables. And the way to balance that, if you have the time, is to watch a couple youtube videos where they show you those tables and copy their picks.

You could say it's always been about that, and extra resources naturally give you an advantage, but I see that as an issue to solve rather than to exacerbate. I have more fun with a "level playing field". I'll even feed my friends information throughout the season to make sure I don't get an advantage over them and run away with it 😀

Overhauling the BPS could have had a similar impact, plus the advantage of having a better BPS. But maybe they are en route to removing the BPS altogether.

Waaay too complicated. I know 2 people who would not play this year if there was anything as complicated as AM again.
Step outside the echo chamber and talk to people who play FPL just for a bit of extra fun at the weekend (the extreme vast majority of players), you'll realise that nobody cares about stats/this.
It's a simple game. Player scores goal, player scores imaginary points, serotonin level goes up.

Then we had imaginary points based on imaginary (data) points (BPS)

And now we have imaginary imaginary points based on imaginary points made from imaginary points

I think it's small enough of a change that if ppl don't like it, they can just continue to play the way they've always played (or at the very least, naysayers will be considering DC's when selecting bench fodder at the very least). If they think it's silly or unnecessary, then it actually doesn't affect them that much. As I said in my post below yours, it just means they have *something* to offer, beyond 2-3 appearances points. They're now a participating cohort in the game, another avenue to find value. I can't really see a downside?

True that many who already play the game every season can continue to play the same and not feel too hard done by. Maybe not the case for new players or others who feel they can't be competitive with the effort they are willing to give the game (e.g. potentially me)

Oh my gosh. This is a superb development and I'm sure this has Mr Sutherns fingerprints all over it.

It isn't some transformational rule (we're still ideally targeting attacking players) but this makes defensive-contributors OPTIONS which is all we've ever asked for. It brings them into the conversation and narrows the gap a little.

It does give the pricing team a headache, as it's a variable they've never worked with before - you don't want to add DC's as a pull, only the push away punters with a massive price hike for the likes of Caicedo. Equally, you can't have Caicedo be £4.5m anymore as he then becomes a moneyball pick and the casuals get screwed. Might explains the delay in launch?

Anyway - overall, definitely a long overdue and positive change. I'm delighted.

Off piste, but speaking about changes. Is there a world where they'd introduce use of subs from the bench? Even if capped to X times in the season, could effectively be a chip.

I'd like to see people encouraged to actually think about a squad rather than all having the same fodder.

Could easily be wrong but to me feels like this change is only applicable to said fodder baring maybe the elites at CBIRTs.

And yet this convoluted defensive change has been introduced! They could have made it easy - Clean sheet for CB get 6 pts, FBs only get 4. Just tag defenders as FB or CB, managers still choose 5 defenders, whichever ones they want. Simple and it boosts CBs.

Fair point, but the same is true with some FBs playing as wingers, Mids as forwards and vice versa, even Mids as defenders and vice versa. The majority tend to stick to their position unless the club have injuries.

Indeed. It's a fun game, so let's keep the rules simple to follow, so we can see the points coming in during the game. Personally, I'd like to see a limit of 2 players per club, which might force us to consider players from the so-called lower ranked teams. It would introduce more variance in teams - most managers pick the same premiums, but when faced with cheaper choices from lower teams, I would expect to see a wider selection.
Cheaper Choices - bit of a tongue twister - might be a good Team Name 😉

If I skip a season will I lose all my previous history if I comeback the following season? Last time I skipped a few(!) seasons, I'd lost my account + history (including my only top 5k finish!) when I came back. If I just login but don't pick a team is that enough to keep it rolling over does anyone know? Thanks

Important change and a similar scoring system with the Fantasy Swedish allsvenkan, German bundesliga & UCL. Made me wonder how long till we see it in FPL since it is a fun a scoring system.
Managers gotta add more finesse to their game or risk getting battered by me. I like it!

I like the new rule but think they've erred on the side of caution. I personally think 3 points rather than 2 would tempt more.

Just have to hope this doesn't affect the prices of the likes of Caicedo, otherwise I can't see it having much impact on people's team selections.

Caicedo spent a lot of time at rb last season. He might not equal last year's points this year.

What is the definition of a clearance, a block, an interception, and a tackle?

For example, if someone kicks it against you to win a corner, is that a block?

If someone makes a woeful pass straight at you, is that an interception?

If you take a goal kick, is that a clearance?

      Etc.

Over the season there will be players who do it more often but on a game by game basis it's mostly down to luck. Have experienced this in other fantasy games.

I agree the subjectivity is obfuscating and a barrier to a good time. For example, according to Opta, a Recovery is "where a player recovers the ball in a situation where neither team has possession or where the ball has been played directly to him by an opponent, thus securing possession for their team". So this is what it's called if someone makes a woeful pass straight at you. But then if someone decides the pass wasn't woeful, then it's an interception: "This is where a player reads an opponent’s pass and intercepts the ball by moving into the line of the intended pass."

However, the FPL announcement says that if you tackle someone and then pass, you have racked up a tackle and a recovery. That is pretty out of left-field, and they allude to the (recovery) subjectivity with, "what they do with the ball after securing it is taken into account when awarding a recovery. The player will often be rewarded for starting a counter-attack [...]"

I'm not necessarily against trying to get the midfielders more involved in our decision, but not at any cost. This is another opaque system that will cause plenty of frustration as FPL and Stats Perform make their decisions, and we just have to trust them -- yet still make in-game decisions based on our non-understanding of their decisions. 😀

That said, I ain't all that bothered. I'm taking it less seriously these days (as you can tell!).

I wondered this, but then again I think it comes out in the wash. For example, we all get frustrated when someone registers an assist for either a sideways pass (followed by a solo wonder goal) or a ricochet into a teammates path, which sometimes turns 2pts into 9pts etc... what's the complaint here... that someone might get 1/10th of a 2pt bonus (i.e. 0.2pts) because of a questionable defensive contribution? They have to get TEN such things for it to start to be a big deal.

I'm repeating my prior comments, but the downside is so small that I think this can only be seen as adding something interesting and positive to the game.

2 point cap means defensive mids will still be useless

The only thing this rule change brings is CBs getting an upper hand over FBs

      1. Rwilliams90
        • 13 Years

Exactly. Especially if they get a price rise. 4.5m might tempt some people for the bench but there's so many mids that score goals so what's the point?

      2. Ruinenlust
        • 7 Years

But a 4.5m nailed-on defensive mid might now be more appealing than a rotation-risk 4.5m attacking player.

100% correct. People sometimes don't like change, but this is a change that only has upsides in my opinion. Nobody is going to lose a mini-league and whinge that it was all because of this. It's easy to understand, has some value but isn't overpowered, gives us options without changing how we fundamentally play the game. It's an easy win, I can't understand what some are taking issue with.

It is fantasy football, yes. But if we're going to pick 11 players in a recognised formation, then encouraging us to use types of players often overlooked is i think good.

It does however remain to be seen whether i will be aware that my player was on 9 defensive blocks when he's subbed off on the 59th minute of a game that finishes 0.0. And how much upset that would add if I did know.

The only impact I can see for team selection is that it might help you decide which cheap defender or midfielder to get.
