Ah, the £4.5m Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forwards.

Every year, we dream of a ‘magic bean’ emerging from the pack of youth products and unwanted second-string players. Most years, it doesn’t happen.

Perhaps that’s a good thing: if there was a cheat code at the bottom of the bargain bin, everyone would own them. It would also make accommodating the heavy hitters elsewhere all too easy.

So, what of this season’s crop of sub-£5.0m strikers?

Here’s our glance through all 21 of them.

The above picture tells a bit of a sorry story – but then, you wouldn’t expect many at that price to be free-scoring, rotation-proof strikers.

In fact, this lot combined for just one Premier League start in 2024/25. That was Chido Obi (£4.5m), for Manchester United.

Many of them had loan spells away from their parent clubs, too, the bulk of which were unremarkable.

To go from squad player at Plymouth Argyle to regular starter at Premier League level likely isn’t going to happen.

ELI JUNIOR KROUPI

£4.5m forwards

Scoring more than all of the others put together was Eli Junior Kroupi (£4.5m).

Bournemouth snapped up the French teenager in February but then immediately loaned him back to old club Lorient.

Over the course of 2024/25, he plundered 22 goals in 30 league appearances for the Ligue II club. He’s also a France international at youth level.

Even as the most promising option from the £4.5m forward pool, how much game-time he’ll get is still a bit of an unknown. He could realistically be back-up for Evanilson (£7.0m) while Enes Unal (£5.5m) works his way back from a long-term injury. Kroupi has also featured on the left flank and in the ’10’ role in his embryonic career, so there’s the possibility of him getting minutes in those positions.

That’s if the Cherries don’t decide to send him out on loan again, as they’ve done with Daniel Jebbison.

Keep an eye on Bournemouth’s remaining friendlies to see how much Andoni Iraola really trusts the 19-year-old attacker. The south-coast side has three all-Premier League clashes to come soon.

“We have to see him come here. Always when you come to the Premier League there is an adaptation process, especially for someone that is so young, with a new language, a different style of football.

“But obviously when you sign a player it’s because you think they have the capacities to perform at this level.” – Andoni Iraola on Eli Junior Kroupi, speaking in February

Some Cherries fans are convinced about him…

ONE EYE ON THE TRANSFER MARKET

Sometimes, a budget option can emerge out of nowhere. Often it’s due to him moving clubs, from a side where he’s low down the pecking order to, say, a lower-table club where minutes are more forthcoming.

There are not many in the current £4.5m pool whom we can realistically expect that to happen to. Sunderland aren’t going to pin their hopes of survival on loaning Dane Scarlett (£4.5m), for instance, who wasn’t even a regular at Oxford United last season.

Marc Guiu (£4.5m) is an altogether different prospect, however. He’s further down the pecking order at Chelsea after the arrival of Liam Delap (£6.5m) and Joao Pedro (£7.5m). Nicolas Jackson (£6.5m), for now, remains with the Blues, too.

So, a loan move elsewhere could beckon.

And, in the last few days, there’s talk of Leeds United potentially making a move on the Spaniard.

He bagged six goals in the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2024/25, so he is a step above your Lankshears and Wheatleys of this world – no offence to them.

Your move, Leeds.

ROUNDING UP THE REST

£4.5m forwards

There’s not much hope about the rest, in honesty.

Five of the 21 forwards currently available at £4.5m are from the promoted clubs but they barely featured at Championship level, so we’re not expecting them to lead the line in the Premier League.

Ashley Barnes (£4.5m), who Burnley re-signed in the winter after his spell at Norwich City fizzled out, is not going to be a regular starter barring recruitment disaster and an injury crisis. Now 35, it sounds like he’ll be more of a Lallana-like cheerleader.

In the case of Ahmed Abdullahi (£4.5m), his non-involvement at Sunderland after signing from Gent was due to him being injured for the entire campaign.

He’s featured and scored already in pre-season and looks a prospect but he’s a raw talent, so he could go out on loan. If not, minutes are possible off the bench.

“We weren’t able to see Ahmed last season because of injury, but now he is ready to start and it means he can have a full pre-season. We’ll get to know the real Ahmed, now.

“He is still very young, so we don’t know exactly what his potential is. It will be interesting to see him through a full pre-season.” – Regis Le Bris, speaking last week

Elsewhere, we’ve touched on Obi above. Despite the failures of Rasmus Hojlund (£6.5m) and Joshua Zirkzee (£6.0m) last season, Rubem Amorim only started the young striker once in the league. United surely swoop for another senior forward or two in the summer, too.

Finally, a bit of an unknown quantity in Zepiqueno Redmond (£4.5m).

The 19-year-old Dutch attacker has joined Aston Villa from Feyenoord for free this summer, following the expiry of his contract.

Redmond has only made four league appearances in his fledgling career, with the rookie fast-tracked to the Feyenoord first team in November 2024 amid an injury crisis up top.

He’s played across the frontline but more recently starred off the left flank against England in the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in June, scoring twice.

We’ll hopefully get a good look at him in Villa’s next friendlies to see if he’s deemed a squad option in the first team or destined for a loan move.

Just went thru the faff of putting 2FA back on my FPL account. Nice of the Premier League to just remove that.

I recommend that anyone who dislikes the changes to the FPL website emails them to give them feedback, hopefully they will revert the website back if enough people express dissatisfaction with it. There are already thousands of posts online from users about it, but I still think its good to email them.

Don't think they can revert it since they've moved to another framework altogether. But I've emailed them to fix the bugs, UI and also to make the page fell less sterile.

I’d be keen on Ndiaye over McNeil if you can find a way. Who is Kastoulos?

My bench will be 4.0 4.5 4.5 4.0, something like Valdi AWB Esteve and hopefully a playing 4.5 mid!

Probably getting on people's nerves with this question but I'd really like to paste all the fixtures into a spreadsheet that looks like the season ticker. Usually some kind soul posts a link but no such look atm.

How do you guys plan your changes, I'm lost without seeing all the fixtures on a spreadsheet so I can make notes etc...

premier league has fixtures that you can sync with your calendar which is pretty handy

and there must be a ticker somewhere knocking about, hasnt Crellin done one?

I don't like Watkins pick. 9m for a striker that's probably not on pens feels like a lot considering 7.5m strikers are on pens. Also worth noting he fell out of favour a few times last season.

Don't forget if you're planning on picking Kyle Walker from Burnley .
He tends to see a lot more action and performs better when he's "playing away from home"

I must admit, I think FPL Towers have got pricing absolutely spot on and deserve a lot of credit for it. The only price I think they've got wrong is Wirtz but I understand the apprehension of transitioning to a new league.

Here's what I've mustered up as a first draft.

    Petrovic
    vanDijk Munoz DeCuyper
    Salah Palmer Wirtz Ndiaye
    Solanke J.Pedro Welbeck

I'm a bit wary of Chelsea not having a pre-season. We saw it with Manchester United a few seasons back. They had a truncated pre-season and were woeful out the blocks.

I might only go for one of Palmer/Pedro as a hedge because going for the double up and for them to be out of sorts would be pretty bad.

As regular as any of them. I can see him & Rodri forming a decent partnership in the middle of the park, with Reijnders being given licence to do what Gundogan was doing a couple of seasons or so ago. As long as you've got sensible cover, I think he's going to be my punt to open with.

Udogie was playing a pretty attacking role and Pedro playing deeper. Its probably a trap though, Frank is just experimenting and seeing what Udog can do. Udog isn't bad though IMO, but he isn't Porro. 4.5 for one of the Spurs defenders is however appealing.

So now that the comments box doesn't auto-update, we need to press f5 every minute if we want to see a reply. If that wasn't bad enough, the page is now constantly taking me back to the last comment I replied to whenever I try to refresh the page to see any new comments that have appeared in the comments box.

These website changes are beyond awful. This place will be a ghost town on match days.

For any smartie pants who reply saying "if you don't like it, leave or similar", I hate the changes, but I like the community here. The people are the only thing keeping me here.

By the way, people can see through the thin veil of lies when you say the website has been updated to "improve our user experience", all of these changes are financially motivated. You want us refreshing the page more often so you can get more ad views. You have also removed the function to sort teams in the fixture ticker unless we pay for a subscription. I can live with the fixture ticker, but ruining the live comment function of this site was a truly terrible decision on your part, those dollar symbols must have really been flashing in your eyes. We shall see how your ad revenue does when you lose 50% of users in the space of 3 months.

Having difficulty getting into the FPL site, it just says loading all the time. Admittedly my iPad is getting on a bit now. Any tech minded people out there who can explain why this might be?

Does it work better on other devices? Did it work OK on your iPad this season? Restart your modem and iPad and try a different browser.

My other iPad is even older. It does the same thing on both of them. It was fine last season although I seem to recall something being a problem at the start of the season. Obviously I could play on my phone but I hate the format.

Evanilson overlooked? In 0 RMTs it seems.

Appreciate losing Kerkez and Huijsen is a huge blow, but Bournemouth are still going to attack and he's a season of prem experience now.

I think Strand regresses. Cunha made Wolves tick going forward (not sure if he continues that at Utd).

Strand-Larsen was fine even without Cunha. I owned him when I couldn't afford Cunha and that didn't go well. Cunha did assist him, but also stole his goals. He was the clear sole main target and is my current draft. Plan is to bench him for gw1

He's in for me, good player, and any team with Iraola at the helm has my confidence even if the big dogs have ripped their defence apart (on that note, their new fullback Truffert looks a player too).

Yeah. Bournemouth always have their plan b and unearth players.

Further, I'd rather they start conceding more and Iraola having to attack games.

He'll be resting on the bench. The fixtures post that look nice and I'd rather just bank that transfer.

Saka v Watkins is my dilemma at the moment.

Was going to ignore Arsenal altogether for the first 6 weeks given the fixtures, but actually they have the standout fixture in GW2 making Saka the best captain option.

Kudus + Watkins for Saka + 5.5m (but there is NOTHING up top unless I go for re gamble on the Leeds guy).

Tough. Anyone got Salah Saka Palmer on their teams? Clear captains for the first 3 weeks in my eyes.

Having those three must leave you with dross around them, no?

How often would you be captaining Saka? Just the one gameweek? Not sure that then justifies him.

I've got Saka Palmer Salah (and Wirtz & Kudus) - Don't know why Saka isn't mentioned as a strong pick no matter the fixtures, admittedly not always the most exciting pick but when he isn't injured he returns in one form or another basically every week, he's Mr. Consistent for me, especially when him and Odegaard are on song together down that flank.

Could probably do with you on the bench to be fair, no chance you're a U-21 French superstar flying below the radar is there?

              Team as is:

              Kelleher / 4.0
              Wan-Bissaka / Gabriel / 4.5
              Salah / Saka / Palmer / Wirtz / Kudus
              Evanilson / Welbeck

              Bench = 4.5 Def / 4.0 Def / 4.5 striker

Toss ups for me on the 4.5 defenders, Van the Man at Spurs seems the obvious pick, but seems in De Cuyper at Brighton and Truffert at Bournemouth we've got some options that lack any form of track record in the league but could be very fun, always my favourite type of pick.

For that mid that's really not looking as wafer thin as I thought it would.

The bench is obviously. I'll get my boots.

Never been a strong believer in a strong bench but even I have to admit it's not got a lot in the tank, though at 4.5 there's some decent options at the back , my 4.0 defender will likely be a lad from Leeds Leeds Leeds, on the proviso that they'll be doing a fair amount of defending and hopefully scoring some of these mysterious new points I've heard so much about.

                  How's your lot looking?

He'll undoubtedly be one of the top scoring forwards but it's the cost to the other selections.

Assuming Salah is there. Maybe Palmer too. Then a 10.5 forward on top takes away a fair few other options.

Although Tucker above is doing alright with 3 premiums.
