Following our look at the (generally unappealing) £4.0m budget options, let’s continue analysing Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defenders by picking out the best that cost exactly £5.0m.

In our position-by-position guides, we’ll analyse the main players fighting to make managers’ opening squads.

OVERVIEW

FPL price change predictions: Who will rise + fall on February 28?

£5.0m could be seen an awkward price point. It’s stuck between the premium big-hitters and a huge number of £4.5m teammates that managers hope will provide better value.

Even so, last season saw two major successes begin at this price. Daniel Munoz (£5.5m) and Marc Cucurella (£6.0m) finished fifth and seventh best amongst all FPL defenders, totalling 142 and 133 points.

Tyrick Mitchell (£5.0m) did well but was overshadowed by his right-sided Crystal Palace equivalent. No defender accrued more penalty area touches (112), shots on target (14) or expected goals (xG, 4.93) than Munoz, yet Cucurella outdid him when it came to goals (five).

Three of the Chelsea man’s final seven home games were a 15-point haul.

Elsewhere, Ibrahima Konate (£5.5m) was part of the champions’ first-choice backline, while it’s recently been revealed that James Tarkowski (£5.5m) would have been the biggest recipient of defensive contribution (DC) points had they been around. Nobody exceeded his 10.8 DC actions per match.

This time, we currently have 29 players tagged at £5.0m.

Let’s have a look at the best options first before rounding up the rest.

Vitalii Mykolenko + Jake O’Brien

Everton v Southampton team news:

For £0.5m less than Tarkowski, you can get one of these Everton teammates. Not that either came close to his hypothetical 44 extra points; instead, they would’ve received 14 and six of them.

In fairness to O’Brien, he only really entered the fray once David Moyes took charge, finding time to score two goals in 17 starts.

As for left-back Mykolenko, he grabbed eight, eight and nine points in the season’s final three outings.

Whichever you prefer, it certainly seems wise to buy some sort of Toffee, as only three teams conceded fewer goals (44) and they get to face Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United during the first half-dozen Gameweeks.

Ola Aina + Neco Williams

FPL notes: Wood hits winner + Forest's fine defence 1

Similarly, an ideal FPL squad would have managers on Nikola Milenkovic (£5.5m) and Murillo (£5.5m). The Serbian bagged five goals, while the Brazilian DC magnet was up near Tarkowski with 10.5 actions per match.

These would’ve ended as the highest-scoring defenders had this new points method been in play, because Nottingham Forest kept 13 clean sheets and conceded the second-fewest big chances (72). It took them to the verge of a shock Champions League qualification.

Even if Nuno Espirito Santo’s side regresses slightly, the prospect of being against Brentford, West Ham, Burnley and Sunderland in the first six matches feels irresistible.

FPL 2025/26: Best fixtures for the new season 1

Additionally, Aina was actually the position’s league leader up until Gameweek 23, fading slightly in later months.

On the opposite side, it took a while for Williams to start consistently. But, from Gameweek 16 onwards, he accumulated the second-most shots (26) and fifth-most points (89) of all defenders.

Given tat

Levi Colwill

FPL in 5 minutes: All you need to know about Gameweek 22 1

Breaking Forest hearts on the final day was Colwill, whose winner took Chelsea up to fourth place. It’s something they’ve built upon during successful post-season run-outs in America and, if the Blues start well, they could be a serious threat this season.

After all, none of their opening six are rated as difficult on our Season Ticker.

FPL 2025/26: Best fixtures for the new season 3

England international Colwill was the Chelsea defence’s most frequent 2024/25 starter, though there’s fierce competition throughout the squad, which could worsen if Jorrel Hato arrives from Ajax.

Trevoh Chalobah (£5.0m) and Malo Gusto (£5.0m) are identically priced but, at this juncture, much less assured of game-time than Colwill.

Maxence Lacroix

3pm team news: Eze starts, Wood returns + Wolves unchanged

While the aforementioned Mitchell remains at £5.0m, he now has competition from the same-priced Borna Sosa (£5.0m). So maybe Lacroix is the one to pursue.

Under the radar last time, he ended as the biggest xG underachiever of all defenders (-2.46). The arrival from Wolfsburg was his position’s number three for headed shots (20) and, of all outfielders, the second-best at set play efforts (27).

Palace clean sheets picked up as the season progressed, as Lacroix averaged 9.9 DC actions per match. He would’ve collected another 34 points.

Admittedly, the Eagles’ early fixtures are mixed. But finding a good rotation partner could make the Frenchman an appealing long-term pick.

Nathan Collins

Which Brentford players to own from FPL Gameweek 6? 5

When combining an overhaul of key players and the risky promotion of Keith Andrews into his first senior management role, it’s hard to fully back Brentford right now. This is despite a strong schedule that ranks second on our Fixture Ticker up to Gameweek 6.

Still, the most-selected goalkeeper is their new signing Caoimhin Kelleher (£4.5m). Whereas for half a million more, you get a centre-back fresh from two goals and seven assists, the sixth-best defender for big chances (six).

Collins was the sole outfielder to play every single minute of 2024/25, ruling out any rotation threat.

Plus, the 6ft 4in talent brought in a good number of DC points. That extra 32 would have put him on a final tally of 159, the fifth-best.

Teammate Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.0m) is one to perhaps swerve for now but keep on the watchlist. With Rico Henry (£4.5m) and Aaron Hickey (£4.0m) back fit, there is plenty of competition at left-back. Lewis-Potter did feature ‘out of position’ on the left wing on Friday, though, so that’s a situation to keep an eye on.

THE LESS DESIRABLES

FPL Gameweek 20 tips: Best players, predicted line-ups, team news + more

Meanwhile, a lot of the other £5.0m picks are either back-ups or hard-to-call assets of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle United.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m) almost certainly won’t start for the Gunners. Conor Bradley (£5.0m), Kostas Tsimikas (£5.0m) and Joe Gomez (£5.0m), in that order in likelihood of starting, are not assured of sustained game-time. Rico Lewis (£5.0m), Vitor Reis (£5.0m) and Nico O’Reilly (£5.0m), even more so at Manchester City.

Tino Livramento (£5.0m) or Dan Burn (£5.0m) are potential targets once the Magpies’ fixtures improve, but they do have Champions League football to deal with. Burn was Newcastle’s top defender for DC points (22) last season. Livramento should get the nod over Kieran Trippier (£5.0m), although Sven Botman‘s (£5.0m) return to fitness casts some doubt over Burn. Avoid for now and reassess later.

Elsewhere, Illia Zabarnyi (£5.0m) and Cristian Romero (£5.0m) are being tentatively linked with moves away. The latter is more likely to stay, but Tottenham Hotspur teammates Destiny Udogie (£4.5m) and Micky van de Ven (£4.5m) are cheaper.

Across London, Fulham’s summer quietness gives off an underwhelming vibe. Not that any defender came close to Antonee Robinson‘s (£5.0m) 10 assists last season. Whisper it quietly but he was also the leading full-back for DC points (22) in 2024/25.

One very much to consider from Gameweek 10:

Finally, Manchester United defenders – and their £5.0m trio of Noussair Mazrouai, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt – won’t be high up on shopping lists with Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea up in the first five Gameweeks. With Martinez still working his way back from injury and Ayden Heaven (£4.0m), Luke Shaw (£4.5m), Leny Yoro (£4.5m) and Harry Maguire (£4.5m) alternatives to the other two, there aren’t even assurances over minutes.

Feel like Schade is priced incorrectly at 7.0 when Mitoma is 6.5.

Mitoma has been consistently good over the past 3 seasons compared to Schade who just has 1 brilliant season behind him.

Think DC could be a bit a trap for some of these players. My hunch is there is a correlation between fixture difficulty and DC points, if that's the case a hefty chunk of the additional points you will be getting will be when players are sat on your bench not in your starting team.

Any names or links? This is literally just a thought I had, I haven't been aware of any discussion around this but I'd be surprised if it's not correlated at all. No surprise that Forest and Everton were teams who ranked in the bottom 3 for average possession according to FBref and have players who had high DC points.

Yeah, that hunch is more right than wrong. It's all a percentage, but I'd say most of those defensive contributions came when facing the top half of the table.

That is an excellent point, it will be counterintuitive and difficult to change the instincts as an FPL manager when we all bench the type of players who benefit from DC when the fixture difficulty goes against what we have always known.

unless its Everton/Forest then I'm not sure DC is a big deal tbh

they were in a draft (2 of Murill, Milen, Tarkowski). Very torn on it tbh. Both their sets of fixtures are better than the 6.0s I think (possibly Cucur/Gvardiol aside)

Everton always start poorly as well

I can no longer see the appeal of going with 3 strikers.
Was tempted with Watkins - Solanke - Evanilson, but Evanilson's *short-term* fixtures aren't exactly great overall.
Plus, he'll probably lose value if he fails so score vs Wolves, with very few options to replace him with. Nobody below 7m appeals to me.

I think the consistent talisman are those cheap no.9s. We had a plethora last season and there's still some remnants. The BPs changed so dramatically you had a Cunha/Wood/Wissa who only had to nab a goal and he's got you 9 points. If the bonus largely remains the same then chasing the upside with a Strand Larsen/Welbeck (till he's injured)/promoted forward etc. etc. I think the 6.5 mids can be so whack-a-mole/unreliable for mins as well. There will be exceptions/nuance though

9.5 is my guess. Less than Saka since he is a fwd. However, if he is on pens and they calculate that into his price, 10 is a possibility.

Big at the back may be back soon. Budget is very tight and premium defenders seem to be underpriced when compared to mids in same price bracket. 5.5 defenders may show value also. I have huge doubts whether 3-4-3 will be optimal formation with this pricing. Understanding DC takes little time, but there is strong possibility that even 5 big at the back might work. Flexibility is another thing though 😉

Yeah, lots of ways to play it. I’ve still gone cheap on defence and Salah, Palmer and Haaland to begin with. I’m not using BB1 or any early chips for that matter but feel this is the easiest way to adapt.

Don't think so personally. There has been less and less clean sheets the past seasons in the PL and I don't think DC's will be enough to compensate for that. Big at the back was a thing when the likes of TAA and Robertsson could collect both G+A and CS's.

Only 6 forwards managed to get 180(+) points last season. Mateta as 7th got 150 pts. Pretty "similarish" story with mids. At 7.0 there are only Rogers and Semenyo with 160 +-1 pts. Those who got more, cost 8 million at least.

there was a period after the initial madness of Salah/Haaland/Diaz where we were even putting Vardy/DCL/Delap in our teams. Defenders are more set n forgets whilst these cheap forwards was just hoping for one goal and I waa confident it would be an 8-9 pointer

Cunha was the only 6.5 starting forward last season. Rest were 5.5-6

I had treble Arsenal defence last season get two (v, v fortunate) opening cleanies

However, against the attacking output of the likes of Saka and the bonus I quickly realised I was being burnt alive

I know the stats say different but I often watch Pool and Arsenal and to me they seem so open and not all that bothered about cleaning

I remember Arsenal being able to shut down MCI attack once totally. And I also remember Zinchenko screwing some clean sheets. Arsenal DD has been pain sometimes, but so has owning the wrong asset (Gabi/Saliba) also.

At the end of the season. the formation that would have scored you the most points is almost always a 3-4-3, last year aswell. But go ahead, try big at the back. I don't mind.

Well, this is just a prediction. Or prediction of what spreadsheets will later say. We have new rules and tougher pricing. No-one know for sure. There are possibly many different paths to glory afterwards. There were some seasons when money didn't matter at all. I can see this season being different also in that sense.

Liverpool and Arsenal have been quite tight at the back and MCI with Rodri previously also. I don't expect them to regress. Arsenal players took a lot of stupid red cards for example.

Set and forget was nearly always 5-3-2 up until the peak season of big at thy back (21-22). Sinxe then it has been 3-4-3 alll the way with some 3-5-2 variations

I'm still chewing over the fat meself. Different approaches/strategies outlooks. At this juncture I don't really trust any side to clean, at least not at the expense of sacrifices further forward, including killing off a seventh attacker

Killing 7th attacker is overkill imo also. I have preferred starting XIV and rotating last player. Good for TV. BB has to be played one day also, so I don't know yet if I am going to have two starting gks or not. Whether to BB before WC or after, that is a question also.

I'm torn atm. Sometimes cheap, sometimes DC Eve For CB focussed, sometimes the 6.0s come in

We're actually losing a few though.

Liverpool FBs don't look worth the risk imo

Gabriel possibly not back till GW2-3

Saliba potentially nerfed by the DC CBs until better fix

5 big at the back gives you absolutely no bench. At least with a 6.0 or two in midfield, you will have playing defenders at 4.0/4.5 on the bench.

Well, perhaps not that big 😉 Here is fast draft:

                  Kelleher / 4.0
Gabriel, Virgil, Cucu, Milenkovic / Esteve
Salah, Palmer, Wirtz, Rice / Baleba
                  Wellbeck, JSL, Muniz*

0.5 itb (supposing Muniz transfer happens) to be used somehow.

Muniz to Leeds would be nice. I don't know if they are still in for him or concentrating on Guiu. From what I hear, Guiu has turned down Ipswich on loan, and all parties are keen for him to stay in the Prem. A starting 4.5 would be nice, even if it did bring back memories of the Rhian Brewster disasterclass.

its Captain Obvious stuff but these whim-flavour-of-the-month options are of no interest any more and DC emphasises that more than ever. Do they play 90, non-injury prone etc.

Come to think of it, why are people bothering with Pedro? Picks up injuries on a whim. Even came off at 59 in the final. Delap and Jackson guaranteed to see plenty of minutes

There's exceptions such as Diaz last season, but after gameweek 5 or so very much fizzled out

I know it’s a tongue in cheek post but he did very well at Coventry with 43 goals in his last 116 appearances and making championship team of the year. 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting is sick.

Nunez hadn’t done it in England too though. This guy scored 6 goals in last season Champions league and a hattrick against City already

Any idea on how to make the FPL site dark mode, I managed to do it through user profile but only worked for the Premier league part of the site but not for fantasy.

Anyone know how Salah and Wirtz played today? Both blanked seemingly

Plenty of promise, despite the blank. They appear to be developing a good understanding, there was one particularly good move where they combined with a one-two and Salah surprisingly attempted the extra pass when the shot was on. In a competitive match he would likely have attempted the shot and scored, so it could easily have been Salah G/Wirtz A.

If you're going for a Leeds 4.0, go for Bijol ( I know he's banned GW1, but he will be first choice, and you ain't playing him anyway)
Too much on keepers as well. Alisson would be a set & forget if you really really wanted to go down the route of hobbling yourself against a more exciting LFC triple up.
Tielemans could tick over nicely though at 6.0.

So with the new defensive points does it make it more or less attractive to own premium defenders? Because if you just own 4.5 defenders you can easily own Salah, Palmer and Saka

I’m not a bees fan. However, if you were to ask me I’d tell you very likely if Wissa is to leave, which seems inevitable.

At the moment it appears its just a tantrum, but they normally end in a transfer.

Everton defence looking solid again. Ndiaye, Alcaraz and McNeil looking good. Beto poor.

And will be playing at Anfield the first match of the season. I can see upside having Wirtz in my team. At least watching the match with hope instead of fear sounds like a plan.

Its early I know, but which six mil mid do you generally prefer?

                      A) Minteh
                      B) McNeil
                      C) Damsgaard
                      D) Anderson
                      E) CHO
                      F) Other?

                      Currently thinking McNeil.

I had McNeil for his little purple patch last season, it worked out good!

I like Damsgaard too. No one will ever pick Damsgaard.
