Aston Villa’s search for a goal continued on Saturday, as Unai Emery’s side scraped a draw against Everton.

Here are our Scout Notes from the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

VILLA’S GOAL DROUGHT

Aston Villa delivered yet another disappointing attacking display on Saturday, as they remain goalless for the 2025/26 season.

Unai Emery’s side generated a mere 0.41 expected goals (xG) at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with their attacking threat, notably for the fourth week in a row, little to none.

Even the second-half introduction of deadline day signing Harvey Elliott (£5.4m) failed to galvanise them:

Morgan Rogers (£7.0m) and Ollie Watkins (£8.9m) were particularly poor, with Watkins failing to register a single shot on goal.

He managed just one touch in the Everton penalty box, too.

“We have to support him, and every player must feel comfortable. There are good and bad moments. Players go through dips in confidence and performance, but we need to find the right balance. It’s important to stay consistent – whether we’re winning or not.

“For Ollie Watkins – calm. Keep working. We’re not scoring, and the striker becomes the focus. But I’m not especially worried about him. We will score again, and he will score again.” – Unai Emery on Ollie Watkins

With Rogers and Watkins below par, Emiliano Buendia (£5.3m) was Villa’s brightest spark.

Handed his first Premier League start in over two years, the Argentine nearly broke the deadlock shortly after the break, but his effort deflected just wide of the post.

Emery will be hoping Villa’s attacking form will improve when they face Brentford in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, before travelling to Sunderland in Gameweek 5.

“Of course, offensively we need more. We need to try to help our strikers, wingers and midfielders. [I am] happy because we competed and this is the first step forward. We are going to work, and we know inside the problem we have.” – Unai Emery

VILLA’S DEFENCE/TIELEMANS INJURY

One positive for Emery was the defensive display of his team, especially that of Emiliano Martinez (£5.0m).

The goalkeeper returned to the Villa starting XI after missing Gameweek 3 due to transfer speculation, and he made two excellent stops on Merseyside, denying Jack Grealish (£6.8m) and Michael Keane (£4.5m).

It’s now two clean sheets in four matches for Villa.

“After we lost at home 3-0, we didn’t score, but we had chances, but we conceded and we were so, so fragile defensively. We conceded three goals against Crystal Palace and it was the first work we did to try to set today.” – Unai Emery

Youri Tielemans (£5.9m), meanwhile, suffered an injury in the first half.

The Belgian, who started alongside Lamare Bogarde (£4.0m) in central midfield, was substituted off at the break.

When asked about Tielemans’ injury, Emery said:

“Youri is going to be out some matches.

“Hopefully we can recover Kamara and Onana – Barkley too. But today, Lamare Bogarde helped us a lot. He did a fantastic job and I’m happy for him. Lindelof also played as a midfielder for 10 minutes. That’s the commitment we need.” – Unai Emery

GREALISH + NDIAYE “FANTASTIC”

Everton certainly had the better opportunities on Saturday, with 20 shots to seven, but they lacked a killer touch.

Keane was a constant threat from set-pieces, registering four shots on goal, while Beto (£5.4m), not for the first time, fluffed several decent chances.

Regarding Grealish, he struck a volley directly at Martinez; however, despite not scoring, he performed exceptionally well.

Pulling the strings from the left side, Gameweek 4’s most-bought player created a match-high five chances and racked up 19 penalty box touches.

In fact, just under 60% of the chances created by Everton on Saturday stemmed from his side of the pitch:

Iliman Ndiaye (£6.5m), meanwhile, overcame a knock and should have had an assist after setting up Beto.

“I thought Jack did brilliantly. I thought Ili was fantastic in the first half and I thought Jack was brilliant as well. I thought the two of them were fantastic in their ball-carrying, their one-v-one situations and are making us look a much bigger threat than we were before.” – David Moyes on Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye

Ndiaye and James Tarkowski (£5.5m) both picked up defensive contribution (DefCon) points.

Tarkowski, who commanded the defence superbly, is now one of just two defenders – along with Marcos Senesi (£4.6m) – to have reached the required DefCon threshold in each of his four appearances this season.

Is it worth to now just go all CBs? I’ve always went for wingbacks/fullbacks like Munoz and Porro

Should I look to shift them and get defenders like Lacroix, Romero, Sensei, etc

Munoz is an exception cuz he's ultra attacking wingback unlike porro and some other full backs

I went Munoz with Sensei Andersen rodon vvd Def con merchants. Not regretting

Some full backs rack up the defcons too.

It's also looking like teams who play more direct football give defcons to the opp. so Virgil, for example, cleaned up against fast counter-attacking BOU and crossing-crazy NEW, but not against possession ARS or BUR (who basically never had the ball).

Opposition plays a huge factor imo.

Senesi, Lacroix, Tarko, VVD and Anderson/Gabriel/Schar/Romero.

Play 5 at the back all season and farm defcons, cleans and baps.

    When to play Free Hit?

Just a random GW you fancy it. I have no Palace and really fancy them to turnover West Ham next GW but is that enough reason to play it then.

      Raya
      VdV - Cash - Gudmundsson
      Salah - Semenyo - Kudus - Reijnders
      Haaland - Gyokeres - Wood

      Dubravka - King - Dorgu - Reinildo

0.4m in the bank for Wood ➡ Pedro next gw.

      Thoughts? Play Dubravka over Raya?

The additional BB is like a get out of jail free card really. Don’t need to save for a double like in the second half of the season. You can play it to restructure your team and cancel the hits for medium to long term points instead of playing for bench points in one week. You could use 2 or 3FT and a -8 on top which could be easily cancelled out with BB appearance points alone.

Saving mine for when Afcon players leave and budget is not an issue. Get good 15 players for festive season and play it whichever week of out 16-19 has the best fixtures for all

maybe 4 back could enable them both, but not the biggest fan of the lack of flexibility when having both. still have salah and want to find a reason to keep over switching to haaland so will watch liverpool midweek for any encouraging signs. why did you make the switch this gw? like i still have this feeling City dont look very good so haaland will struggle at times, whereas liverpool are a cut above

I'm just going with whoever is a better cap picks over a 2-3 weeks

Haaland was a better cap pick for first 3 weeks so started with him. Switched mainly cuz of bur key and Everton who looked pretty poor defensively first 3 weeks

Plan is to switch back in 6 with the FTs saved

Not a big fan of having both and it backs u into a corner going forward and u have to go for players u know just have no ceiling. Still got 80 on WC and nearly top 100k which I'm sure I would be nowhere near around if started with both

lacroix over guehi. you want the centre CB if a team plays a back 3

vdv vs romero is an interesting one. i guess romero will be better for defcon, but vdv has never reallly shown much threat from set-pieces, whereas romero historically has for sure.

but now its 2 vs 1 this season (if you include psg). i mean romero scored as well vs west ham but you know, not good refs and all that.

so maybe frank has unlocked vdv from set-pieces and expects more from him? in which case romero not worth the extra money.

i think from that list would narrow it down to a,c or e. everton as an attacking force look very good this season, and enzo going back abit last season into the start of this one has a very good g+a return per match, since maresca pushed him abit further up. between those 3 i dont know how to narrow it down

Rotation is the least of my worries - he was only rested because he played 180 minutes for Spain.

His price is high, but I'm going to reserve that premium slot so I can move to VVD, ARS defence if needed. For me, he's the defender most likely to score in the league (closely followed by Munoz) - the attacking positions he takes up are outrageous

Is a bit weird how the games on the final day of a GW don't have these kind of bonus and defcon adjustments, they could maybe lock all the scores one day after instead, once the full stats data comes through

Another strange thing about this season - its normally a god awful GW after an IB, but it wasn't this time. The strange season continues.

      My team;

      Sanchez (Dubvravka)
      VdV Murillo Rodon (Tark Esteve)
      Salah Semenyo Kudus Gakpo (Reijnders)
      Pedro Gyok Wood

1FT. 1.6m itb. Save and play Wood and Murillo? Any weakness in the next gw?
