As happened 12 months ago, there have been some tweaks to the Bonus Points System (BPS) ahead of the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) campaign.

It’s not a radical overhaul: the best-performing players (in terms of BPS scores) still receive one, two and three bonus points in every fixture.

But some of the numbers that go towards deciding this have been changed ahead of 2025/26.

Penalty goals

ActionBPS score in 2024/25BPS score in 2025/26
Players scoring a penalty24 (forward), 18 (midfielder), 12 (defender)12

Penalty merchants (especially forwards): beware.

This change has been introduced to differentiate spot-kicks from other goals scored.

In previous years, a penalty-taking forward would, more often than not, be in the mix for bonus points just for scoring from the spot and doing little else.

Now, though, with his BPS points halved for a penalty goal, he’ll have to work harder.

No matter what the position, a player gets 12 BPS points for every penalty converted.

Goalkeeper saves

ActionBPS score in 2024/25BPS score in 2025/26
Goalkeeper saving a penalty98
Goalkeeper saving a shot2n/a
Goalkeeper saving a shot taken from inside the boxn/a3
Goalkeeper saving a shot taken from outside the boxn/a2

Goalkeepers will benefit from these changes in 2024/25.

Last season, goalkeepers had a flat rate of two BPS points for every save.

Now, however, two points is the minimum.

Shot location will be the determining factor. A goalkeeper will now earn three BPS points if the shot he saves was taken from inside the penalty area. He’ll get two BPS points if the effort came from outside the box.

Penalty saves will get 11 BPS points in total: eight for the thwarted spot-kick and an accompanying three for saving a shot that was taken from inside the box.

Goalline clearances

ActionBPS score in 2024/25BPS score in 2025/26
Goalline clearance39

Anyone making a goalline clearance will now earn nine BPS points. That was a mere three last season.

Successful tackles

ActionBPS score in 2024/25BPS score in 2025/26
Successful tackle (net)2n/a
Tackle wonn/a2

Prolific tacklers not only have the opportunity to bag defensive contribution points but also have a better chance of bagging bonus points to go with it.

Previously, two BPS points were awarded for each ‘successful tackle (net)’. In other words, this was the total of ‘tackles won’ minus ‘tackles lost’.

Instead, this season, each ‘tackle won’ in a match will be rewarded with two BPS points.

Why have they decided that compared to last season forwards lose 12 BPS for scoring a penalty but midfielders only lose 6 BPS? And midfielders get 5 points vs 4 for scoring a pen. What are they doing?

Its not better. Nobody is picking Haaland over Salah now, especially with the 5 FT to help you around AFCON. Template started nice and early.

True. They need to make that change on points for penalties in the main game next. They cannot say penalties are equal regardless of position for the bonus but not in the main scoring. That is a farce and I can't see how anyone can argue otherwise.

Az planted the seed to Mark on black box. He basically argued that penalty goals should be worth less due to how much value having penalties adds to a player.

Presume the drip feed of all these rule changes are taking the place of price leaks of players from previous seasons?

FPL to go live early next week?

Think once they are done with all this, price leaks maybe for 2-3 days, then launch.

Last year they announced a couple of rule changes the day before the launch,
and from 2019 onwards they have revealed some of the new prices from one to six days before the launch,
but they haven't finished testing the essential updates yet.
These updates are normally completed at least a couple of days before the FPL launch (and sometimes a long time before) in order to give managers a chance to update their personal details and save time on launch day, and they seem to take longer every year.

There have been far more rule changes to announce this time, and I expect the first price reveals to follow on Sunday or Monday.
I would hope that testing the essential changes must now be very close to completion, and if it is then they should be ready to launch sometime next week.

I think I'll be concentrating more on Fan Team this season than the FPL. It's basically the game we knew and loved without all this new crap...

I might have to give it a look. Too many of the changes are completely illogical. I'm was prepared for some changes but we must be pushing double figures now. How do you explain that to somebody who barely follows the game? Do it for a reason not just because you want to. Even those defensive bits in the new bonus, they are basically just double counting things they already count in the defensive contributions in the main scoring.

If somebody barely follows the game what difference does the tweaks in bps make for them?

I don't really see why people are so angry. The minor changes make sense, the double chips are great, AM is gone.

I really want new captains and subs every match day like UCL, and think this is the biggest thing that could encourage risk taking, but this stuff is fine.

No one is angry, mostly disappointed. The minor changes make sense but the chip changes doesn't. AM was as bad as these new chips, no difference really, just more made up points.
UCL is a terrible game and I played it for two weeks back in the day.

Why don't more chips make sense? If you're going to have them you might as well have them free to be used earlier in the season to mix things up rather than having the entire game structured around everyone having the same strategy for double game weeks.

I disagree on UCL but I did come 50th in the world or something last season

Where is the goal line clearance stat in the members area? Can't see a tick box for it.

To recognise the importance of a goalline clearance, and how crucial it could be to a match result, a player will now earn NINE points in the BPS, as opposed to THREE points last season.

So these extra 5 AFCON FTs (the ones intended to bail out the ultra casuals who don't realise there's such a thing as AFCON until they see Salah, Mbeumo et al suddenly flagged). Can they be used on anyone, or just AFCON-bound players?

Of all the changes, this is the only one that has annoyed me. The double chips I can live with. They're an opportunity to score points, and what do points make.....? Being able to boost 3 extra SGWs will add a bit of strategy earlier in the season. The BAPS changes are OK - I just need to find the next Stuart Pearce.
But these AFCON transfers just scream 'dumbing down'.

My guess is that the more Chelsea's opponents have the ball the more interceptions and defensive contributions Caicedo is able to make. And teams like Arsenal tend to have the ball more than teams like Sunderland.

This game is getting too easy. Double chips is excessive. Preferred the assistant manager chip then..5 free transfers just bcoz few players are going to Afcon? Thats ridiculous.. people will have Salah and who else from Africa? Maybe 2-3 at most.
Don't like the assist rule changes either. Everything going to be an assist now.
I like the bps reduction in penalties but a better approach would have been 3 points for a penalty scored regardless of position. Non penalty goals should be worth more. Or add 1 or 2 extra pointsfor goal outside box.

Will the Game Week 16 Five transfers be treated as a chip? If I go into Game Week 16 with 3 free transfers I should still have three free transfers for GW 17. If not it sucks. Not every player will leave on GW16 would like to make multiple transfers on GW17.

If you don't get to carry transfers over into GW17 you are being penalized.
Player A one free transfer into GW16 one free transfer GW17.
Player B three free transfers GW16 one free transfer GW17?
If this is correct it has to change.

Everyone gets a mini WC of 5 transfers in GW16 that rolls over to GW17. Use all your FTs in GW15 etc. Other people will need all 5 given injuries, AFCON etc.

I’m sure you are right, but I’ve not seen anything confirming they carry over if you don’t use them.

From a Fantasy perspective, the AFCON matches cover Gameweeks 17-22.

However, there is a possibility that some players will leave early for the tournament ahead of the Gameweek 16 fixtures.

To account for this scenario, your total number of free transfers in Fantasy will be topped up to the maximum possible number of five in Gameweek 16.

This will allow you to react if any members of your FPL squad do depart early, while also helping you avoid any potential price drops when rival managers sell the same players.

            2. "Strategically, in order to fully profit from the extra free transfers, managers would be wise to ensure they have ZERO free transfers in the bank by the end of Gameweek 15."

They would only advise this if the new FTs carry over.

              1. ...and there is this:

"The extra transfers for AFCON can help you navigate the period up until the second Wildcard becomes available in Gameweek 20, which then allows you the opportunity to bring back the likes of Salah and Mbeumo when AFCON ends."
