As happened 12 months ago, there have been some tweaks to the Bonus Points System (BPS) ahead of the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) campaign.
It’s not a radical overhaul: the best-performing players (in terms of BPS scores) still receive one, two and three bonus points in every fixture.
But some of the numbers that go towards deciding this have been changed ahead of 2025/26.
Penalty goals
Action | BPS score in 2024/25 | BPS score in 2025/26 |
---|---|---|
Players scoring a penalty | 24 (forward), 18 (midfielder), 12 (defender) | 12 |
Penalty merchants (especially forwards): beware.
This change has been introduced to differentiate spot-kicks from other goals scored.
In previous years, a penalty-taking forward would, more often than not, be in the mix for bonus points just for scoring from the spot and doing little else.
Now, though, with his BPS points halved for a penalty goal, he’ll have to work harder.
No matter what the position, a player gets 12 BPS points for every penalty converted.
Goalkeeper saves
Action | BPS score in 2024/25 | BPS score in 2025/26 |
---|---|---|
Goalkeeper saving a penalty | 9 | 8 |
Goalkeeper saving a shot | 2 | n/a |
Goalkeeper saving a shot taken from inside the box | n/a | 3 |
Goalkeeper saving a shot taken from outside the box | n/a | 2 |
Goalkeepers will benefit from these changes in 2024/25.
Last season, goalkeepers had a flat rate of two BPS points for every save.
Now, however, two points is the minimum.
Shot location will be the determining factor. A goalkeeper will now earn three BPS points if the shot he saves was taken from inside the penalty area. He’ll get two BPS points if the effort came from outside the box.
Penalty saves will get 11 BPS points in total: eight for the thwarted spot-kick and an accompanying three for saving a shot that was taken from inside the box.
Goalline clearances
Action | BPS score in 2024/25 | BPS score in 2025/26 |
---|---|---|
Goalline clearance | 3 | 9 |
Anyone making a goalline clearance will now earn nine BPS points. That was a mere three last season.
Successful tackles
Action | BPS score in 2024/25 | BPS score in 2025/26 |
---|---|---|
Successful tackle (net) | 2 | n/a |
Tackle won | n/a | 2 |
Prolific tacklers not only have the opportunity to bag defensive contribution points but also have a better chance of bagging bonus points to go with it.
Previously, two BPS points were awarded for each ‘successful tackle (net)’. In other words, this was the total of ‘tackles won’ minus ‘tackles lost’.
Instead, this season, each ‘tackle won’ in a match will be rewarded with two BPS points.
Absolutely. I like almost all of the changes - much more fun. I agree about the CCs - I can foresee some of them wringing their hands in frustration. (let alone us mere mortals!!)
»That's really worrying about Bruno playing deeper in the scout notes. The new defensive contributions rule was about to make him the best pick in the game (to quote baker from above average FPL).
»If anything I'd say they will be the least fittest but again its dependent on individual players and how much they look after themselves during this break. Historically you'd hear of players turning up for pre-season a stone heavier than when they went on a break. Chelsea have 2 weeks to get such players ready to play a full season.
»You can't change the rules but you can take advantage of them, that's what I will plan (and fail) to do!
»I'm not playing unless I get a participation trophy.
