Jarrod Bowen is now a forward, Omar Marmoush and Matheus Cunha midfielders and Myles Lewis-Skelly a defender!

Yes, it’s the annual Fantasy Premier League (FPL) positional switcheroo, in which certain players are reclassified.

There are 11 in total ahead of the 2025/26 campaign – and here they are.

Players who have changed position for FPL 2025/26

WHY THESE PLAYERS HAVE CHANGED POSITION

Much of the content below came from this speculative piece last month but it bears repeating as it’s effectively the rationale behind their reclassification.

MYLES LEWIS-SKELLY (ARSENAL): MIDFIELDER TO DEFENDER

Lewis-Skelly pretty much exclusively featured at left-back in 2024/25.

It started off as an enforced experiment in mid-December. Arsenal were without the likes of Riccardo Calafiori, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Ben White for the UEFA Champions League tie against Monaco, leaving the Gunners short in the full-back department.

Lewis-Skelly excelled in the role, however, keeping his place for the Gameweek 16 clash with Everton a few days later.

The youngster never looked back, starting 15 of the Gunnersโ€™ 23 final league matches. Donโ€™t forget that there was domestic rotation around the European fixtures, too: he was the left-back in all six Champions League knockout round ties.

Even with a reclassification, the England international isnโ€™t massively appealing as a Fantasy asset โ€“ price dependent, of course. He managed just one attacking return in 2024/25, registering just three shots and nine chances created in over 1,300 minutes of pitch-time.

KEANE LEWIS-POTTER (BRENTFORD): MIDFIELDER TO DEFENDER

For a player who had never (so far as we can tell) started a senior match as an orthodox left-back before the start of 2024/25, Lewis-Potter didnโ€™t do a half-bad job for Brentford last season.

He was an ever-present in the matchday squad, starting 36 of those games.

Left-back had been a problem position in the (almost) season-long absence of Rico Henry. Lewis-Potter wasnโ€™t even the first band-aid: Kristoffer Ajer, Vitaly Janelt and Sepp van den Berg had all been trialled there in the opening 10 Gameweeks, to not much success.

Lewis-Potter, primarily a left-winger by trade, was then switched to the back four in Gameweek 11. And that was pretty much that for the rest of the campaign.

The ยฃ5.0m โ€˜midfielderโ€™ delivered six attacking returns in 2024/25 โ€“ although three of those came in the first 10 Gameweeks when he was playing further up the flank.

Next season will be an interesting watch now that Henry is back fit again. Could we see Lewis-Potter as an โ€˜out-of-positionโ€™ left-winger at some point, now that he is reclassified by FPL?ย

ILIMAN NDIAYE (EVERTON): FORWARD TO MIDFIELDER

change position

The Toffees had contrasting fortunes under Sean Dyche and David Moyes but the two Everton bosses were united in one belief: that Ndiaye is not a centre-forward.

The Senegalese attacker played almost the entire season as a left-winger. There was the occasional appearance in the โ€™10โ€™ role and the opposite flank, too, but not up top.

Just as an aside, no Premier League outfielder kept more clean sheets (15) than Ndiaye last season. He’s now eligible for clean sheet points.

MATHEUS CUNHA (MANCHESTER UNITED): FORWARD TO MIDFIELDER

change position

Cunha looks set to take up the same role (left-sided 10) at United as he chiefly operated under Vitor Pereira.

Even before Gary Oโ€™Neilโ€™s dismissal, the Brazilian had been plying his trade mostly in the attacking midfield positions, rather than leading the line.

That was seen as enough for Cunha to be reclassified as a midfielder.

By our calculations, he would have gained 22 points as a midfielder through goals/clean sheets in 2024/25. Ten, however, would have been lost through bonus.

That still would have seen him finish as the fourth-highest scoring midfielder in the game.

CODY GAKPO (LIVERPOOL): FORWARD TO MIDFIELDER

change position

The Dutchman spent the vast majority of the season on the left flank.

In fact, not one of his Premier League starts came as a centre-forward.

As is the case elsewhere, life as a midfielder is more lucrative, Fantasy-wise. Gakpo would have been better off with a change (+10 goal points, +5 clean sheet points, -8 bonus points).

MATHEUS NUNES (MANCHESTER CITY): MIDFIELDER TO DEFENDER
NICO Oโ€™REILLY (MANCHESTER CITY): MIDFIELDER TO DEFENDER

One of the features of Pep Guardiolaโ€™s line-ups in the second half of 2024/25 was the use of FPL midfielders Oโ€™Reilly and Nunes in defence.

All six of Oโ€™Reillyโ€™s Premier League starts came at full-back, as did 14 of Nunesโ€™ 19 line-up appearances. The Portugal international hasnโ€™t featured in midfield since December.

Nunes would have been better off to the tune of โ€“ by our rough calculations โ€“ 25 points had he been an FPL defender in 2024/25.

Seven assists was also a total that only one defender, Antonee Robinson, could better, although itโ€™s worth pointing out that three of Nunesโ€™ seven came when he was playing further up the pitch.

OMAR MARMOUSH (FORWARD TO MIDFIELDER)

There was certainly a case to changeย Marmoushย to a midfielder: only five of his 16 league appearances came as a centre-forward.

We still weren’t sure whether FPL would recategorise him, having cast our minds back 12 monthsย to a similar question over Julian Alvarez.

Alvarez played in an โ€˜8/10โ€™ hybrid role for a big chunk of 2023/24, with less than a third of his 36 league appearances coming as a line-leading striker.

But Alvarez remained a forward before he moved to Atletico Madrid. Perhaps FPL Towersโ€™ view was that City would only be an Erling Haaland injury away from Alvarez getting a string of starts as the league championsโ€™ central striker.

The same applies to Marmoush this season – but FPL have reclassified him regardless.

RYAN SESSEGNON (DEFENDER TO MIDFIELDER)

No ‘out of position’ run-outs for Ryan Sessegnonย on the wing this season.

He made three starts as a left-back/wing-back in 2024/25, four as a winger.

Given that he logged only 574 minutes of pitch-time, was there really enough evidence for a positional reclassification?

FPL have done it anyway, and he’s now a midfielder.

JARROD BOWEN (MIDFIELDER TO FORWARD)

Probably the most interesting reclassification is that ofย Jarrod Bowen.

His 2024/25 league starts were split almost equally between winger/attacking midfield (18) and striker (16).

But under Graham Potter, they came mostly as part of a two-man attack in a 3-5-2.

FPL had seen enough to rebadge him as a forward – which does dent his appeal somewhat.

RODRIGO GOMES (MIDFIELDER TO DEFENDER)

On the surface, probably the change that will least affect FPL managers.

However, Rayan Ait-Nouri‘s departure does leave a void at left wing-back at Wolves.

And wing-back is where Rodrigo Gomes was used in six of his seven league starts, as well many of his substitute appearances, last season.

Could he be the one to plug the gap left by Ait-Nouri, who delivered 11 attacking returns in 2024/25?

    Did anyone see Bowen coming?

Surely he has spent the majority of last season as an attacking right midfielder?

It's a crock of sh*t to put it bluntly. He only played up front out of necessity because of the injuries to other players such as Antonio and Fulkrug. He is a midfielder and he won't play up front if the others are fit and are playing.

FPL is finally listening to me. I called for Bowen to become a forward in June (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2025/06/06/fpl-2025-26-the-players-who-could-change-position). I'm glad Mark (FPL Emomali Rahmon) listened.

According Transfer market I don't see the reason for Bowen to be classified as a FWD.
          Starting position 24/25: CF = 15, RW = 14, RM = 4, AM = 2, SS = 1

So FPL can now predict where a player will play in future?
For the same reason Salah was never classified as FWD when he virtually played striker in place of Firmino.

Periodic moan from me about FPL's fetish for making every single attacking player a midfielder. Net loss of 3 viable forwards from the pool. Lucky to get one viable option from each club nowadays. Marmoush in particular feels unnecessary. In the event of a Haaland injury there's 0 picks from one of the best sides in the league. Great job once again.

I've said similar on here quite recently so won't go too deep but lack of options really does have a detrimental effect on the game. They're happy to experimented with stupid Assistant Manager chips and AFCON transfers but haven't noticed the gigantic imbalance in the game that they seem intent on making worse at every opportunity

Their definition of what is considered to be a forward is far too narrow, they've set very restrictive standards to follow. Does the game really benefit from Ndiaye now being a midfielder? If you asked any football fan on the street what broad category you'd put him in nobody is responding midfield, exact same for Marmoush.

It's much more important than your official rank and a distinguished medal of non-casualness. Ask Messi & Ronaldo if they would ever walk out onto a football pitch with a 69 or an 88 on their backs instead of a 10 or a 7.

Exactly, doesn’t miss a minute whereas Isak misses a lot of minutes and always has.

I thought 9. He hasn't officially moved yet so they're in a tricky spot in that if he moves he probably loses pens but if it falls through he's on them still.

Yep, 9 would probably be too much for him at United, at Brentford probably 9.5-10, but under no circumstances would he be 11.5 ๐Ÿ˜†

Wouldn't go near him at anything more than 8.5, and even then with Cunha reclassified as a mid I'd probably go down that route instead if going United attack.

If the CC's are pushing it then it'll be popular. I'm not sure if the can't wait bit is tongue in cheek but I thought the idea of two lots of chips was everyone would be different in strategy? That bit is tongue in cheek by the way.

As somebody who doesn't like having TV tied up on the bench I'm tempted to BB early then WC first international break with as much value as possible in the starting 11. I'm also considering using the 5 AFON FTs, to set up double BB over the festive period then WC after the AFCON players have returned to a team that has much value as possible in the starting 11 for the rest of the season.

I'll have a go at a Salah + Haaland draft but it's probably gonna work. Definitely no chance of squeezing Saka / Palmer in there with those two

Remember No BS teams ๐Ÿ˜‰ They lost top 10k with 200 pts or something like that. Both Salah and Haaland started well last season, but Haaland stopped scoring soon. Since Foden and Palmer failed last season and Saka isn't explosive enough, having neither when they both haul (and wirh C fail) can end season within 2-3 game weeks.

Absolutely has not crossed my mind to go without Salah. No player is even close in this game, and now he has better players to supply him. And because I'll captain him every week, even at 16.0m I'd be getting two Salahs 8.0m each. Phenomenal value even if I don't captain a couple of weeks.

I'll just leave this here: https://ibb.co/PzvStfhy

The season was over for Liverpool quite early towards the end. Mo will start strong, I've no doubts.

Looking forward to pre-season to see how he gels with Wirtz, Ekitike, Kerkez, & Frimpong. Unbelievable additions.

In 2022 the updates finished on 3rd July, giving us a day or so to amend our account details before they launched on the 5th.
The interval is normally longer than that, but they've been running late this year because of the large number of changes, and it'll already be the latest launch since at least 2012 (apart from.2020 when the previous season had been extended because of COVID).
