Ah, the £4.5m Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forwards.

Every year, we dream of a ‘magic bean’ emerging from the pack of youth products and unwanted second-string players. Most years, it doesn’t happen.

Perhaps that’s a good thing: if there was a cheat code at the bottom of the bargain bin, everyone would own them. It would also make accommodating the heavy hitters elsewhere all too easy.

So, what of this season’s crop of sub-£5.0m strikers?

Here’s our glance through all 21 of them.

The above picture tells a bit of a sorry story – but then, you wouldn’t expect many at that price to be free-scoring, rotation-proof strikers.

In fact, this lot combined for just one Premier League start in 2024/25. That was Chido Obi (£4.5m), for Manchester United.

Many of them had loan spells away from their parent clubs, too, the bulk of which were unremarkable.

To go from squad player at Plymouth Argyle to regular starter at Premier League level likely isn’t going to happen.

ELI JUNIOR KROUPI

£4.5m forwards

Scoring more than all of the others put together was Eli Junior Kroupi (£4.5m).

Bournemouth snapped up the French teenager in February but then immediately loaned him back to old club Lorient.

Over the course of 2024/25, he plundered 22 goals in 30 league appearances for the Ligue II club. He’s also a France international at youth level.

Even as the most promising option from the £4.5m forward pool, how much game-time he’ll get is still a bit of an unknown. He could realistically be back-up for Evanilson (£7.0m) while Enes Unal (£5.5m) works his way back from a long-term injury. Kroupi has also featured on the left flank and in the ’10’ role in his embryonic career, so there’s the possibility of him getting minutes in those positions.

That’s if the Cherries don’t decide to send him out on loan again, as they’ve done with Daniel Jebbison.

Keep an eye on Bournemouth’s remaining friendlies to see how much Andoni Iraola really trusts the 19-year-old attacker. The south-coast side has three all-Premier League clashes to come soon.

“We have to see him come here. Always when you come to the Premier League there is an adaptation process, especially for someone that is so young, with a new language, a different style of football.

“But obviously when you sign a player it’s because you think they have the capacities to perform at this level.” – Andoni Iraola on Eli Junior Kroupi, speaking in February

Some Cherries fans are convinced about him…

ONE EYE ON THE TRANSFER MARKET

Sometimes, a budget option can emerge out of nowhere. Often it’s due to him moving clubs, from a side where he’s low down the pecking order to, say, a lower-table club where minutes are more forthcoming.

There are not many in the current £4.5m pool whom we can realistically expect that to happen to. Sunderland aren’t going to pin their hopes of survival on loaning Dane Scarlett (£4.5m), for instance, who wasn’t even a regular at Oxford United last season.

Marc Guiu (£4.5m) is an altogether different prospect, however. He’s further down the pecking order at Chelsea after the arrival of Liam Delap (£6.5m) and Joao Pedro (£7.5m). Nicolas Jackson (£6.5m), for now, remains with the Blues, too.

So, a loan move elsewhere could beckon.

And, in the last few days, there’s talk of Leeds United potentially making a move on the Spaniard.

He bagged six goals in the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2024/25, so he is a step above your Lankshears and Wheatleys of this world – no offence to them.

Your move, Leeds.

ROUNDING UP THE REST

£4.5m forwards

There’s not much hope about the rest, in honesty.

Five of the 21 forwards currently available at £4.5m are from the promoted clubs but they barely featured at Championship level, so we’re not expecting them to lead the line in the Premier League.

Ashley Barnes (£4.5m), who Burnley re-signed in the winter after his spell at Norwich City fizzled out, is not going to be a regular starter barring recruitment disaster and an injury crisis. Now 35, it sounds like he’ll be more of a Lallana-like cheerleader.

In the case of Ahmed Abdullahi (£4.5m), his non-involvement at Sunderland after signing from Gent was due to him being injured for the entire campaign.

He’s featured and scored already in pre-season and looks a prospect but he’s a raw talent, so he could go out on loan. If not, minutes are possible off the bench.

“We weren’t able to see Ahmed last season because of injury, but now he is ready to start and it means he can have a full pre-season. We’ll get to know the real Ahmed, now.

“He is still very young, so we don’t know exactly what his potential is. It will be interesting to see him through a full pre-season.” – Regis Le Bris, speaking last week

Elsewhere, we’ve touched on Obi above. Despite the failures of Rasmus Hojlund (£6.5m) and Joshua Zirkzee (£6.0m) last season, Rubem Amorim only started the young striker once in the league. United surely swoop for another senior forward or two in the summer, too.

Finally, a bit of an unknown quantity in Zepiqueno Redmond (£4.5m).

The 19-year-old Dutch attacker has joined Aston Villa from Feyenoord for free this summer, following the expiry of his contract.

Redmond has only made four league appearances in his fledgling career, with the rookie fast-tracked to the Feyenoord first team in November 2024 amid an injury crisis up top.

He’s played across the frontline but more recently starred off the left flank against England in the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in June, scoring twice.

We’ll hopefully get a good look at him in Villa’s next friendlies to see if he’s deemed a squad option in the first team or destined for a loan move.

    Kelleher - Pickford
    Frimpong - Virgil - Gvardiol - Esteve - Bogle

Cheers! You're quite right about Bradley. Need to think about it, might still risk it! I don't think I mind Esteve or Bogle. I mean, I am well aware that they're not premium defenders, but got to cut costs somewhere, and their fixtures aren't the worst so I could see them doing ok especially in GW1. Mayenda might very well just blank though, but at least he plays at home.

    Kelleher.
    Gvardiol. Virgil. WanB.
    Salah. Palmer. Wirtz. Ndiaye.

OK, this is my early-doors draft.

    Kelleher
    VVD Cucurella De Cuyper AWB
    Salah Palmer Reijnders Wirtz
    Isak Welbeck

    Darlow Baleba Tuanzebe Guiu

Leaves me 1.0ITB. Not convinced I want to go with 4ATB, so could use that mill to upgrade Baleba or Guiu (although if he does go on loan to LUFC, I'd def keep him).

Best use of 6.0 in the midfield?
    Rutter? Minteh?
Tielemans always goes under the radar, but is consistent and has decent fixtures off the bat?
    Thank you

    Kelleher / 4.0
    VvD, Gabriel, AWB, VdV, Guehi*
SPW (Salah, Palmer, Wirtz), Rice*, Longstaff*
    Solanke, Evanilson, JSL

The idea would be to bench both Strand-Larsen and Evanilson for the first gw and try to resist the temptation of false early bandwagons. 4-5-1 or even 5-4-1 for the first gw. After that 3-4-3 or 4-3-3. Guehi to Kerkez and downgrading one premium def is on the cards. I just simply couldn't find acceptable cheap 8th attacker.

For that Salah/Palmer team, it looks really strong across the squad. Well done.

Downgrading JSL to Burnley (or Leeds) 5.5 striker is a possibility also. Below that there is nothing imo. One million doesn't help much if I want to upgrade Longstaff, but would give me 2nd playing gk and possibility to make some changes with defs (Guehivto Muñoz and 6.0 to Tarkowski).

5 players flying under the radar:

Odegaard - Gyokeres is a focal point and will create space for Ode’s late runs. Should score more goals this year, increasing Ode’a assist threat.

Hudson-Odoi - strong record at home, and should be nailed given Elanga’s sale.

Alcaraz (Everton) - at 5.5m, and the release of Doucoure, he should be nailed. Good record towards the end of the season.

N.Jackson - the only one on this list that relies on context. If he gets the opportunity to start, at 6.5m he’s a great option.

Senesi - replaced due to Huijsen, but he’s a good defender with exceptional goal threat. Should start this year, and Petrovic is a very good shot stopper.

with Gyokeres, Arsenal have a focal point getting on the end of Ode’s passes, and pushing the defence back giving more space for Ode.

Both have a poor fixture in GW 1 and 3. Any Bournemouth players would have to be benched. I expect some returns not beyond Palace in the harder fixtures so I do have Eze in my draft and will just start him away to Chelsea GW1 and hope for an attacking return.

I agree. I think there is a bit of clutching at straws in the 4m keeper bracket. Darlow is another one - might be OK for GW1 or 2, but I can't see Leeds not signing a first choice keeper before the end of the window.

Yea. Sometimes its just best to pick either a crocked bench player, or one who has no chance of starting. Just someone with very low ownership. Don't want to waste a transfer taking out a bench keeper who is dropping. Its only 0.1 sure, but that 0.1 at the start of the season can make a difference when you wc.

I was all set on BB GW1 with Darlow & Kelleher, but for that reason I'm going off the idea. Thinking now I might WC into BB whenever there's a nice set of fixtures around 12-15 and use the AFCON transfers to get out of it again. Means I should have a decent TV built up by then, a bit of info on who's actually starting and in form, and don't have to use transfers on dead wood in GW2 & 3.

Yea, there is a fixture swing in gw13. And as you said the 5 frees for Afcon can offer an opportunity to bench boost then, plus you wont have money tied up in Salah, so can spread it out a bit more. BB in GW1 can work, but I just feel that the premiums like Haaland, Salah, and Palmer are probably going to open in a quite an explosive manner. I'd rather own them and be wrong, then try and scramble to them with chips.

I have McNeil currently. Not many options at 6 mil, its him or Minteh. But already have Welbeck. Will see how pre-season goes, maybe I will get the double.

How do people intend to keep up with predicted price changes this season?

            Fplstats no longer exists

I think there is a function on Livefpl - but not sure that's fully up and running for the season yet - I certainly can't link my team....thanks

Used LiveFPL all last season and it was more accurate than FPLstats or Fantasy Football Fix predictors which I had used in previous seasons.

Given that Salah will be on the right, where are we expecting Wirtz to play? I've been assuming a Firmino-esque role which would leave Gakpo vs. Diaz on the left but could it even be Diaz central and Wirtz left?

Wirtz should be a central attacking midfielder / no 10, similar to Palmer. Unlikely he will lead the line. Diaz is actively trying to leave and should be gone. Darwin is surplus and will also go if Liverpool can sell.

They are still trying to sign Isak, which could go either way. He has reportedly asked to leave which puts Newcastle in a difficult position. Newcastle need to replace Wilson and then would want a replacement for Isak. If they don’t get Isak they will sign another. Front three should be Ekitike Isak/another Salah with Wirtz behind. Ekitike can also play central. Gakpo likely backup on the left.

Internet, so obviously take everything with a pinch of salt.

Always expect the unexpected. A nice November blizzard or other such act of god, a couple of postponements and suddenly a FH up your sleeve will make you king of all you survey.

No-one expects funerals, but no-one lives forever either. There is a remote chance for a blank or double, but I have zero idea if any postponed game would be played this year.
