FPL pre-season: Malen + Watkins again, Xhaka debut, secretive Man City 2

ROB MAYESโ€™ GAMEWEEK 6 TEAM REVEAL

I was always planning to get Erling Haaland (ยฃ14.3m) in this week, but with Florian Wirtzโ€™s (ยฃ8.2m) benching, Robert Sรกnchez (ยฃ5.0m) feeling risky, and maybe a little bit of a rage-move thrown inโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve decided to pull the trigger on the Wildcard.

Hereโ€™s the current draft:

Why isn't anyone on WC going for Isak? Surely the time is now. Should be one of the top FPL scorers in that team.

You on WC? Thoughts on Isak?
        Haaland, Richa, Gyokeres then?

"The positive thing is he is back on the grass and has been for three or four days,” the Tottenham boss said before his team’s match against Brighton. “He is progressing forward - slowly, but forward.”

          Solanke will be a while...

It's more difficult to score if you don't have the minutes. Liverpool have their game on Saturday, then Champions league midweek, then Chelsea away on the Sunday. With Slot saying Isak will have his minutes managed for a while until he's up to full fitness then he's a minutes risk. The Ekitike suspension may well complicate the Managers plan a bit, but I'm not going near Isak until he starts playing 90 mins. 10.5M is a lot of cash to have sitting on the bench.
Haaland is clearly the in form striker at the moment, but he's under a slight injury cloud, so we await more info on Friday. Gyokeres hasn't impressed me much, seems to struggle to get involved for long stretches of games. Rich has the ability but can be hit or miss. The joys of FPL decision making ๐Ÿ™‚

He scored a goal in 45, that’s more than Watkins has in 90 mins several times this season, Liverpool are fast starters, don’t think the mins thing is that big a deal when the striker pool is so poor right now.

His mins will increase not decrease, can see 60 mins on Sat, that’s enough time for a return as Tue showed & then 70 against Chelsea (Ekitike to start the CL game)

Gyokeres has 3 in 5 with Old Trafford, Anfield, Forest & City in those 5, he looked sharper last night, he’s not the problem, the supply line is (same with Haaland a lot last year) the question is, do you think Arsenal will create more with Saka, Odegaard & Eze together in the team? All 3 will be in the team at the weekend.

Regardless of who you pick, you can be certain the other strikers will score a brace.

I’ve had Watkins for 3 weeks of 90 mins so taking a punt (even if mins are reduced) is not that much of a gamble.

"He scored a goal in 45, that’s more than Watkins has in 90 mins several times this season"
It's irrelevant that Isak scored a goal in 45 mins, it guarantees nothing. And why you dragged Watkins into the conversation I have no idea.

"Gyokeres has 3 in 5 with Old Trafford, Anfield, Forest & City in those 5"
Talk about misleading stats! He blanked at Old Trafford, Anfield and against City. His 3 goals came against Forest (1) who haven't kept a clean sheet all season, and at home to Leeds (2) who were in their second PL fixture since being promoted. I expect more from a 9M pound asset.

"do you think Arsenal will create more with Saka, Odegaard & Eze together in the team? All 3 will be in the team at the weekend."
They may or may not create more, but given that the three of them have hardly played together due to injuries to both Saka and Odegard my money would suggest they won't. I would also be reasonably confident that all 3 won't be in the starting side given Saka has just returned from injury and is having his minutes managed according to Arteta, Odegaard is also under an injury doubt and they have a lot on their plate with 5 games in a short time span.

Isak often came off for Wilson at Newcastle around the 70 minute mark, with Ekitike there the minutes will be shared. While Isak will be their main striker I doubt you will be getting 90 minutes from him.

Whilst I don't disagree about thim getting early subs, Isak not getting injured was so so important for Newcastle. Would say even more-so than for Liverpool.

Newcastle couldn't really afford to have Gordon up top every week, or Wilson starting every week, or Osula - so Isak was definitely protected.

Morning all, I’ve wanted Foden for a week now, was happy to miss the Arsenal game but the Burnley one looks appealing, would you -4 him in for Mbuemo?

You know the risk, you can never count on Foden getting minutes. Not gonna say no to doing it, but go into it with eyes wide open

Yeah I’m not too concerned about the risk, you can see he’s looking his old self so with that in mind, I think Pep starts him regularly again.

It’s more about getting the return on the hit & if Mbuemo is worth abandoning.

I got Foden in (knowing the risks and of course the possibly rewards) but if was to lose Mbeunmo I wouldn’t have done it, he is a decent pick especially at his price - only utd asset I would consider. And a -4 on top seem a bit too much.

Timber nailed? And VVD instead of Gabriel? Any other things to consider on this wildcard?

        (0.2 itb)

        Pope (Dubravka)
        Gabriel/Timber/Tark/Senesi (Rodon)
        Bruno/Semenyo/Ndiaye (Reijnders, Xhaka)
        Haaland/Gyokeres/Pedro

        1. Mr Turnip 1
            1 day, 21 hours ago

Timber not nailed. He’ll be rotated with White now that CL is back. Also, he can be a tad injury prone so another reason his minutes might be managed

          • Mr Turnip 1
              1 day, 21 hours ago

I would sell Timber, keep Gabriel. Imo Jaiden Anthony > Reijnders, he has better xGI in games which were equally as difficult as City’s start, is more nailed as there’s no Pep Roulette, and the only reason to have Reijnders is to play him this week vs BUR, but you’ve benched him anyway.

I quite like the Pope pick. Think everyone defaulting to Raya is missing the fact that he’s never the top scoring keeper, even though he’s usually up there, and that Newcastle defence is looking really good this year, though they’ve arguably had mostly easy defensive fixtures, whereas Arsenal’s have been mostly hard.

I’m not 100% sold on Bruno, but see the appeal. It also feels quite hard to pick good mids rn, especially in Bruno’s price bracket

Most content creators are going for Gabriel as their Arsenal defender fix.

              Why not Calafiori?
Looks like a starter, 0.4m cheaper and much more involved in attack than relying on set pieces Brazilian.

I have Raya and Timber and will triple up with Calafiori or Gabriel. I agree, the headed goal Gabriel scores after months without just to point out he is the best Arsenal defender to pick is a bit of a reach. Calafiori does look a lot more threatening in attack and even if he comes off in some games for Lewis-Skelly it will most likely be after the 60 minute mark locking that CS in early.

Arteta tends to stick to a winning starting 11.

Califiori is now a rotation risk with CL having started and his history of injuries. His minutes will likely be managed a bit in easier PL games, especially with Lewis-Skelly as a very competent backup

This looks like one of those wildcards where you’ve picked alternate picks for the sake of it.

Frinpong, Gakpo, Wirtz, Rich all going to have mins managed. Grealish doesn’t play in GW8. Only 2 penalty takers.

I’d have another stab if it was me.

I actually like Donnaruma tbf, City defence is good, they have good fixtures, and he’s good at making saves (unlike Ederson), but agree that some other parts of the team need a look

Thoughts on bringing in Isak now to save a transfer in GW8?
I wildcarded in GW4, and already have Haaland & Gyökeres.

I mean if you roll this week instead then you’ll still have the same number of transfers after GW8, so don’t make loads of sense tbh. Liverpool fixtures aren’t great and Isak will be a minutes risk for a while, I’d probably steer clear. Who are you selling to buy him?

Will be selling Ekitike & Gakpo.
                        Ekitike has to go imo.
                        Not many options besides Isak.
Richarlison is too short if a punt, Joao Pedro may not start in GW8 due to international football and UCL etc.

Not worth a transfer for me. If a choice to buy fresh, I’d just go Bruno. But if I had Boomo already, I’d keep now. There’s a haul coming soon.

Is Reminders an every week starter? A lot of WC drafts seem to be treating as one (with a 4.5m or 5m as 5th midfielder) and the savings you can get that way are appealing, but the underlying stats aren't quite as encouraging...

Suspect a bit of recency bias in picking him on WC (I’ve done it too). Seems the most nailed in City midfield but nobody is ever nailed with Pep and you’ve got to take the odd benching on the chin.

Get Jaiden Anthony for more nailedness and better underlying data (backed up by actual returns too!)

Fair to get Foden over Saka/Eze, Mbeumo and Ndiaye? May WC any week.
